Lawn green bowling can be played in Covid-19 safe conditions on our green, with three rinks being open and the ability to play singles, pairs or triples games.

From 4 July, we are also able to provide bar facilities in safe environments both inside and outside.

Bowling is a safe sport where social distancing can be achieved, making it one of the few sports that can be undertaken by people of all ages, providing gentle exercise, good friends and mental stimulation to balance the general negativity we have all been through in the last few months.

However, a number of changes to the sport and social facilities have been necessary to keep people safe from contracting the virus when engaging in our activities. We welcome members and new bowlers, but on condition that you abide by our new ways of playing and socialising, so that we all stay safe. Further changes may also occur as the covid-19 threat gets less or if there are spikes in the future and we will update the following advice when this occurs.


For the safety of all concerned, bowlers must stay alert and follow this guidance when using the green.

Govt permission to bowl says:


 You can play lawn bowls where facilities have reopened, but you can only take part in these activities by yourself, or with members of your household or with no more than 5 other people outside of your household, as long as you are able to maintain social distancing.”  “ A maximum of three triples games on three greens can be played”.

Play arrangements

• Off-site booking system for rink allocation (contact Roger Hopkins)

• Minimum of 20 minutes between allocated time slots to enable players to arrive/depart safely

• Communicate in advance with players to advise on social distancing requirements that are being applied on arrival at the club – for example not leaving cars until a certain time before their allocated time slot

• Only play on three rinks for the time being. (Jack Lafford will set up the rinks to be played on)

• Maximum of 18 players on club premises at any one time (assuming average of six people per rink who are not from the same household).

• Visitors/spectators can be admitted to the club in addition to those playing. Players must close the gate, once inside to prevent casual walk-ins by the public.

• To enable green maintenance to continue, please play between 1330 hrs and 2000 hrs each day in preference, although mornings when no maintenance is occurring the green can be used , but check first.



Clubhouse and Facilities

• The clubhouse will be re-opening from 4 July, but changing rooms and the kitchen are to remain closed.

• Sanitiser & wipes will be available for cleaning hands and equipment before and after playing

• A rubbish bin will be put outside for use, but players are requested to take any rubbish away with them

Social distancing rules must be strictly adhered to; you must remain at least two metres apart from other bowlers (who are not part of your household) at all times.



To minimise the risk of infection, only essential items (as below) should be utilised during any session:

• Mat

• Bowls

• Jack

• Gloves

• Scorecards (these should be retained by one person only if required)

  • A measuring tape can be used by the owner only, avoiding contact with the woods.


To minimise the risk of infection, any other equipment is not deemed essential equipment at this time and should not be utilised. This includes:

• Scoreboards

• Bowls pushers

• Ditch markers

• 2m distance sticks

• Chalk


Player’s responsibilities


In advance

• Do not go to the club if you are experiencing any coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms or any cold or flu-like symptoms, in particular a cough or a high temperature. 

• Dress appropriately before you get to the club to avoid the need to change clothes – change shoes immediately before and after your game

• Travel to the green on your own or with members of your own household only – do not offer a lift to, or accept a lift from, anyone outside your household. Do not arrive more than 10 minutes before your allocated booking time.


Personal care & Hygiene

• You can use the toilets at the club, but clean any surfaces you have touched after use

• Take any food or drink you might need with you

• Wash or sanitise your hands and sanitise any equipment (including bowls, jacks and mats) you use before and after you play – do not assume that the person before you has sanitised the equipment thoroughly

• Sanitise padlocks, keys and door handles before and after use

• Personal hygiene is important.  Refrain from spitting on your hands or licking fingers to avoid cross-contamination from bowls.


Playing the game

• You can play singles, pairs or triples on one rink as long as you stay two metres apart, from other persons outside of your household.

• Do not shake hands before, during or after a game

• Only one player should handle each mat during the session

• Two jacks (one at each end) should be used and this should be set by one player at each end only throughout the session

+  All woods entering the ditch are deemed to be dead (including any that have touched the jack): if the jack enters the ditch, the nearest wood on the green wins the end.

• If scoring:

o Social distancing rules must be strictly adhered to at all times

o Do not touch your opponents’ bowls with your hands

o Avoid measuring for shot/s unless you really cannot tell, by sight alone


When you leave

• When you finish playing, change your shoes and leave the club– ensuring that you have sanitised all equipment used and that the club is secure (as applicable)


+  Sign the form in the jack/mat cabinet to confirm you have cleaned the mats and jacks. All names should be entered, as this assists with charging the correct people for green fees and serves as a   record for “track & tracing” when required.


The bar facilities will re-open from 4 July 2020-07-03

Whilst the clubhouse will re-open from 4 July 2020 – this is for limited use and includes:

  • Providing bar facilities
  • Providing access to toilets
  • Provides access for hand-washing
  • Provides access for maintenance and cleaning


The changing rooms must remain closed.

No indoor bowling is allowed

The kitchen will remain closed, as social distancing cannot be achieved. As a result, this Risk Assessment does not provide advice on the preparation and serving of food.

The two primary controls which apply at all times relate to SOCIAL DISTANCING  and HYGIENE.  These two aspects, if controlled and supported by all occupants, will significantly reduce the risk of the virus being spread to other people.

The committee met on 29 June 2020 and agreed the following in relation to the re-opening of the clubhouse:


Requirements(by law from 4 July)

  1. We must keep a temporary record of all customers, guests and members that use our facilities. This must be retained for 21 days. This is for track and tracing requirements which we have a duty to assist with.
  2. Groups can sit together, but this is limited to two households indoors and also to 6 other people when outdoors.
  3. Social distancing will still apply outside of these “groups”.
  4. A “group” cannot be larger than 30 people. Bowls England advise a maximum of 30 people in the clubhouse at a time.
  5. Any pinch points need to be assessed and markings put down where people can wait outside the pinch point. This only applies to the access corridor to the toilets.
  6. Configure tables and chairs to achieve a 2 metre social distance between other tables and chairs. The same applies outside.
  7. Discourage queues indoors for the bar or toilets
  8. Serve at tables if possible and use contactless payments or use of cards whenever possible, in preference to cash.
  9. Manage the use of toilets –One person at a time (for each gender) and one further person can wait by the disabled toilet in the corridor. Others should wait until the areas have cleared.
  10. In the event of poor weather, indoor areas can be used for shelter, but social distancing rules must be applied.
  11. Keep the area to be used well ventilated if possible
  12. Hand sprays should be used on entry to the clubhouse on each occasion


Providing the service(practical applications of what is required)

  1. Social distancing to be applied between voluntary bar staff and customers – One person only to work behind the bar each session.
  2. Advise “groups” to stay apart from other groups (min of 2 metres)
  3. Do not remain at the bar after being served. Don’t lean on the bar.
  4. Reduce opportunities to touch surfaces – Remove bookshelf/books, remove any chairs and tables which are additional to those put out for groups, wedge doors open if practical.


  1. Roll up indoor mats to provide space for spacing tables and chairs. Anything removed from the main clubroom can be put in the changing room temporarily, as changing rooms are to remain closed.
  2. All surfaces to be disinfected at the end of a session by the duty bar person, including door handles, tables etc (see schedule 1 for the list of surfaces that need to be routinely wiped with a disinfectant cloth).
  3.  Disposable paper towels are to be used in preference to cloth towels.
  4. The bar person will place a glass washing tray on the bar for empties. Customers should only handle their own glasses.
  5. Contactless or card payments should be encouraged. The bar person will start a tab for any purchases, with the person responsible for settling their tab on leaving.
  6. Use table service in preference to people going to the bar after their initial purchase.
  7. Ensure good toilet hygiene. Have hand washing liquids available. Surfaces to be wiped down with a disinfectant cloth if touched by individuals before they leave the toilet area.
  8. In good weather, it is preferable to set tables and chairs up in the outside area and create a temporary bar using a table at the entrance.
  9. The duty bar person or other committee members should encourage social distancing if they think this is being compromised (as we have a duty of care, we can’t just turn a blind eye!)
  10. If the bar area gets busy, consider opening a fire exit to provide a one way system of entry and exit.
  11. Empty waste bins regularly. We prefer if individuals rubbish was taken home with them.
  12. When the weather is good, tables and seats will be arranged outside and the bar will operate from a table in the main doorway, reducing the need to enter the premises.

Note: the practice of table hopping to chat with different people cannot occur, so please don’t do this. Speak across tables if you need to communicate with others.
